Rent it yourself, or take a captain

About half our guests drive; half take a captain. Neither is better — they suit different days.

Self-drive rentals

Half or full day, a dock briefing, and a marked chart. Most first-timers do fine on the sound side.

Captained charters

A local captain runs the boat. Best for covering water, fishing, or an inlet. The sunset cruise is always captained.

What’s included either way

  • Required safety equipment for everyone aboard
  • A proper briefing, not a set of keys and a shrug
  • A marked-up local chart
  • Honest advice about tide, weather and where to go

Questions people actually ask

Do I need a boating licence to rent a boat on Topsail Island?
North Carolina requires boater education for operators born on or after 1 January 1988 on vessels of 10 horsepower or more. Bring photo ID and your card if it applies. Every rental includes a dock orientation. REPLACE ME with your own confirmed policy.
What if I have never driven a boat before?
That is normal. Every rental starts with a hands-on briefing and a marked chart. If you would rather not navigate, take a captained cruise.
Do you book stays and local attractions too?
Yes. The Salty Edge bridges fishing charters, shoreline stays and coastal attractions — from the flats to where you lay your head.
What happens if the weather turns?
Safety decides. If conditions are not right we reschedule or refund. REPLACE ME with your exact weather policy.
What should I bring?
Sun protection, water, a hat, soft-soled shoes and a cooler if you want one. We provide the safety gear. No glass.
Can we see dolphins?
Often — dolphins are common in the waterway, especially early and late. They are wild, so we never promise them.
Where do trips depart from?
We launch from 143 Canal Dr in Sneads Ferry. The inlet, creeks and waterway are a short run. Dock details come with your booking.
