Island History

Charts, a war, and a rocket programme nobody expects

Between 1946 and 1948 the Navy and Johns Hopkins ran a guided-missile programme from these dunes. The concrete is still there.

Where the name comes from

The documented name comes from New Topsail Inlet on early charts. The pirate-lookout story is folklore — details are on the pirate history page.

Before the war

For most of its recorded history this was working coast: fishing families and shifting sand, reachable mainly by boat.

World War II

Camp Davis was built at Holly Ridge. The island became a firing range and civilians left.

Operation Bumblebee, 1946–1948

The U.S. Navy and Johns Hopkins used the dunes for Operation Bumblebee, an early guided-missile and ramjet programme.

What was built here

  • A launch platform on the beach at the south end of the island.
  • An assembly building, where test vehicles were put together. It still stands in Topsail Beach and now houses the island’s history museum.
  • Eight concrete observation towers, spaced down the island, used to photograph and track launches from multiple angles.

The towers today

Several of the eight towers survived the storms. Once you know what they are, you count them the rest of the week.

Becoming a beach town

The programme ended in 1948. Towns took shape — North Topsail Beach, Surf City and Topsail Beach — and the island stayed low-rise. Chart label, fishing coast, firing range, rockets, then a beach town with military concrete in the dunes.

Seeing the history yourself

The assembly building and the towers are the land marks. A boat trip shows why the island’s shape mattered.

The Island Transformed

Pirates, then a war, then rockets, then a beach town

Most beach websites stop at the pirates. Topsail Island's actual timeline is far less ordinary — and the concrete evidence is still standing on the dune line.
