Things To Do

What to actually do on Topsail Island

The list a local crew would give you — water, beach and wildlife first.

If you only do one thing

Get on the water. The creeks, sandbars and dolphins are on the sound side, and the sound side needs a boat. If you have one afternoon, spend it going around the back.

Planning around the tide

Sandbars show near low water. Creeks need mid to high tide. Fishing is better on moving water. If you book with us, we plan around the tide for you.

With kids

  • Sandbars. Shallow, warm water in the middle of the waterway.
  • Pier fishing. No boat required.
  • Free parks. Soundside Park, North Topsail Beach Town Park and Stump Sound Park — all on the local access guide.

Rainy day

The museum in the old Operation Bumblebee assembly building. Read the background first.

Being a good visitor

  • Stay off marked nests and the dunes.
  • Keep lights off the beach at night in nesting season.
  • Observe no-wake zones and take rubbish — especially line — home.

Things to do on Topsail Island

Start with the water, the beach and the wildlife. The rest of the island is a short list below.
  • Boating

    Get on the water

The sound, creeks, sandbars and inlets are only reachable by boat. Rent a pontoon or take a captain.

  • Beaches

    Walk the whole beach

Twenty-six miles: wildest at North Topsail, busiest in Surf City, quietest at Topsail Beach.

  • Wildlife

Watch for dolphins and sea turtles

Dolphins work the waterway early and late. Loggerheads nest in summer — stay off marked nests and keep lights off the beach at night.

Also worth doing

  • Fish the inshore water. Redfish, trout and flounder work the creeks and oyster bars. Piers and surf fish well from spring through autumn.
  • Launch from a public ramp. Free NC Wildlife ramps at Sneads Ferry put you on the New River; Sloop Point covers the south end.
  • Walk out on a pier. Seaview, Surf City and Jolly Roger put you over deep water without a boat. Pay at the shop and go.
  • Let the kids loose in a free park. Soundside Park, North Topsail Beach Town Park and Stump Sound Park are free to walk into.
  • Play the disc golf course. The wooded course at Stump Sound Park is free and about fifteen minutes off the island. Bring your own discs.
  • Find the rocket history. The observation towers and assembly building are leftovers from Operation Bumblebee, 1946–1948.
  • Take the sunset seriously. Sunset happens over the waterway. A soundside dock, the bridge, or a boat are all correct.
  • Eat where the locals eat. Ask what came in that morning. Our partner list is a shortcut for Saturday night.
  • Chase the pirate story. Read the folklore, then the 1718 grounding and the 1996 Beaufort Inlet wreck. The true version holds up.
